Buhle Khumalo Foundation for Epilepsy Launches “Save the Child” Project to Support Child-Headed Homes in South Africa
Durban, South Africa – The Buhle Khumalo Foundation for Epilepsy has embarked on a powerful new initiative titled “Save the Child on Child-Headed Homes Project”, aimed at providing critical support to orphaned children left vulnerable in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Across South Africa, the reality is stark: thousands of households are now run by children, many of whom lost parents to the pandemic and have been left to survive with little or no assistance — sometimes even abandoned by extended family. These children are forced to grow up too quickly, carrying adult responsibilities while being deprived of the chance to experience their own childhoods.
Giving Back Childhoods
The Save the Child Project seeks to restore dignity, stability, and hope to these children by offering practical and emotional support. The initiative encourages the public to get involved through meaningful acts of giving and care.
“We cannot ignore the reality that so many of our children in South Africa are carrying the weight of entire households, often with no safety net,” said a representative of the Buhle Khumalo Foundation. “This project is about empowering them, protecting them, and giving them back the right to be children again.”
How to Make a Difference
The foundation has outlined several ways that ordinary South Africans, corporates, and community groups can step in to support:
Donate school uniforms to restore dignity and confidence for children attending school.
Pay school fees to ensure uninterrupted access to education.
Adopt a family by committing to support a child-headed home.
Contribute towards basics such as food parcels, toiletries, or clothing, even if only once a year.
Create an experience of love by spending time with children, hosting outings, or mentoring them.
Donate to the Foundation either as a public donor or as a discreet/private funder, ensuring that every child receives much-needed care and support.
Every child in South Africa has a powerful story, the foundation emphasizes, even if their voices are often silenced. The initiative seeks not only to meet material needs but also to affirm the humanity, resilience, and potential of these young people.
A Call to Collective Responsibility
The Buhle Khumalo Foundation urges all South Africans and the international community alike to recognize the plight of child-headed households and respond with compassion and action.
“Every contribution, no matter how small, can transform a child’s life. Together, we can ensure that no child is left behind,” the foundation noted.
